About
Phaethon, the son of the mighty sun god Helios, longed to prove his worth to his father. He begged his father to let him drive the golden sun chariot across the sky for at least one day, believing that by doing so he would show his father that he was worthy of his position and family. Hélios, apprehensive, reluctantly complied with his son's request, and Phaethon took the reins of the chariot. When he went too high, the Earth froze, and when he went too low, the Earth caught fire. A large part of Africa turned into a desert and dried up the surrounding rivers, lakes and seas. The people, their skin turning brown, screamed in agony of terror. Phaethón realized the chaos he had caused and tried desperately to control the chariot, but it was too late. The gods watched in horror as the world was consumed by fire and ice. Even Helios himself watched helplessly as his son's arrogance brought ruin to the land. Finally, enraged by the destruction and chaos, Zeus hurled a thunderbolt at the chariot, knocking Phaethon to the ground and sending him free-falling to his death. Phaethon's dead body fell from the sky and landed in the river below. His sisters, devastated by the loss of their beloved brother, mourned his death and their tears turned to amber. They cried so long and imploringly that they finally turned themselves into poplars bordering the river. Even Phaethon's lover, Kyknos, was turned from grief into a swan, forever swimming in the waters of the tragic end of his love. This story is elegantly told through the symbolism of a wagon wheel placed in the center of the design. The rays of the sun, shining as well as the golden reins, are held by Phaethon's own hand. The edges are decorated with poplar leaves and branches with swan feathers and amber tears. One of the last elements added to the overall composition is the thunderbolts of Zeus, which represent Phaethon's striking end. For us, Phaethón's story represents ambition and hope that we should never stop striving to push the limits of our possibilities and to want to do more in our lives. This plate is part of the Metamorphoses Collection. Shop the other styles: Adonis , Hyakintos , or Deucalion .
